2005 Prius Engine Overheating – Water Pump Replacement

This 2005 Toyota Prius came into the shop with engine overheating after short trips. After diagnostic inspection, we confirmed that the mechanical water pump had failed. We replaced it with a new OEM unit and restored proper coolant flow.

Symptoms:

  • Overheating after short drives
  • Coolant disappearing or leaking
  • Weak cabin heat at idle

Diagnosis:

We pressure-tested the cooling system and found visible coolant seepage around the pump. The mechanical belt-driven water pump was not circulating coolant properly at idle.

Work Performed:

  • Drained and flushed the cooling system
  • Removed failed water pump and gasket
  • Installed new OEM pump and serpentine belt
  • Refilled coolant and tested operation

Results:

  • Overheating issue resolved
  • Coolant levels stabilized
  • Full heat and stable engine temperature
